THE MONT VENTOUX, HIKERS, CYCLISTS AND NATURE LOVERS PARADISE.
From Avignon to the Comtat Venaissin plain, from the Dentelles de Montmirail to the Luberon, it cannot be missed, the Mont Ventoux : the highest peak in Vaucluse nicknamed the Giant of Provence.
Its summit is at 1911 meters. It allows this département in the South of France, in the heart of Provencal landscapes, to have a ski resort in winter.
THE MONT VENTOUX, A FAMOUS PEAK
The Mont Ventoux has fascinated many artists, painters and poets.
It figures in many pictorial and literary works.
In 1335, Pétrarque began his letter thus « My climbing of the Mont Ventoux » sent to Dionigio Da Borgo San Sepolcro, Augustinian monk: « Today, I climbed the highest mountain of this area named appropriately the Ventoux, guided only by the desire to see the extraordinary height of this place… »
This peak is well known in sports, especially for those who like cycling, the Mont Ventoux is one of the mythic stages of the Tour de France.
DISCOVER THE VENTOUX BY WALKING OR PEDALING..
Protecting natural resources and developing harmonious activities on the territory allowed the Ventoux to be classified Biosphere Reserve in 1990.
Today, walking in the Ventoux is discovering a remarkable floral richness and a unique biodiversity in a space where more than 1000 vegetal species live and more than a 100 bird species.
In the summer, climbing the slopes of the Ventoux to the top on foot to see the sunrise or sunset or follow the tracks of chamois in the spring with naturalist guides... remain an unforgettable experience.
The Ventoux is linked to bicycle touring. 14 bicycle rides called “Welcome, the Ventoux on a bike” have been marked around the Ventoux on small secured roads, off the beaten track.
Easy loops are offered to families, other more sport oriented for the experts. Each can find his rhythm and duration, the appropriate itinerary to discover the natural, agricultural and landscape heritage in the Comtat, the perched village the AOC Ventoux vineyards…
