About twenty kilometers south of Saint Remy de Provence, in the heart of the Alpilles Natural Park is found the quiet village of Eygalières.
Eygalières is a small village full of charm which has managed to retain its authenticity. It has many Provençal mas in local stone, all tastefully restored.
Heritage lovers will love this village with its many historical monuments. As an example, you can visit the ruins of its old feudal castle, its Saint-Laurent church and the esplanade of its old keep.
Not to be missed: The museum of the Vieil Eygalières, located in the Chapelle des Penitents, built in the 17th century, offers a collection of old tools which were used long ago to farm in the area as well as many testimonies about the traditions and the land of the Alpilles. The chapel offers also a superb view of the Montagne de Caume, the Alpilles and the Durance.
Eygalières is perched on top of a small hill of the Alpilles, surrounded by vast olive groves and many vineyards. Superb hikes are possible starting at the village:
- A beautiful bike ride is by Route D24 which snakes in the Alpilles mountain, if you go toward Aureille you will discover the pretty Pas de la Figuieres (altitude 247 m)
- The GR6 path of long hike goes through the village of Eygalières and, among others, Baux de Provence and Aureille.
For lovers of nature and plants, several gardens offering “magical plants” await you.
This is the case of the Jardin de l’alchimiste, located in the old Eygalières, the Jardin de l’alchimiste offers its visitors a unique walk to discover this garden where everything invites meditation. The Jardin de l’alchimiste also welcomes every year many cultural, historic or culinary events.
