Cabrières d’Avignon is a charming village of the Monts du Vaucluse which managed to keep an authentic character.
When walking in the village, you will discover superb buildings in dry stones and tastefully restored.
If you go in the village countryside, you will encounter bories.
These are small traditional dwellings, built and used by shepherds in the 17th and 18th century.
2 highlights in this village have to be discovered: The plague wall and the Cedar forest...
Not well known by visitors, the Plague Wall is part of the small heritage of Provence.
Those famous ramparts were built originally to protect the inhabitants of the Comtat Venaissin from the great plague of Marseille, from 1720 to 1722.
They were built in 1721 by decision of Avignon and of the Comtat Venaissin, in order to limit the propagation of the disease.
This sanitary line was then 27 kilometers long between the Durance and the Mont Ventoux. It was guarded night and day by French and Papal troops which prevented all crossing.
From 1723, the wall had no longer any sanitary purpose and the stones were used for other buildings.
Today, only 6 kilometers of the Plague wall are still visible between Cabrières d’Avignon and Lagnes.
A very beautiful walk awaits you. It will take you to Methamis, pretty perched village of the Ventoux.or in the small village of Fontaine de Vaucluse
Nature’s lovers will also love Cabrières d’Avignon for its beautiful cedar forest.
The cedar forest was planted in 1860.
Originally thought out by a forester convinced that it would benefit the local economy, this forest is now mature.
It covers now 5 hectares
It offers unique environmental conditions to the local fauna.
Red squirrels, chickadees and boars can be seen.
350 different species of mushrooms can be found.
This special ecosystem is explained along a marked botanic path, accessible to all.
It is a very nice hike for families, in a cool atmosphere, under the shade of trees, very appreciated during the big summer heat.
