4 not to be missed events of the summer in Provence
What is new in Provence

Summer in Provence is a season rich in cultural, artistic and gourmet events. Whether you are a fan of theater, photography, classical music or gastronomy, the region offers festivals that will awaken all your senses.

Here is an overview of the four major summer events in Provence:

1. Avignon Festival (July 5-25)

The Avignon Festival, founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, is one of the most prestigious theater and performing arts festivals in the world. Every summer, the city of the Popes becomes a veritable open-air theater where artists and spectators from the four corners of the globe mingle. For three weeks, more than 1,000 shows, ranging from classical theater to contemporary creations, are presented in emblematic places such as the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des Papes, chapels, cloisters and even streets and squares of the city.

The festival is divided into two parts: the "In", which brings together official shows, often major international productions, and the "Off", a space of freedom for independent companies and young talents. Avignon in July is a unique experience, where every street corner breathes art and culture, creating an electrifying and festive atmosphere.

2. Arles Photography Meetings (July 1 - September 22)

The Arles Photography Meetings, founded in 1970 by Lucien Clergue, Michel Tournier and Jean-Maurice Rouquette, are a major event for photography enthusiasts. This festival offers exhibitions, screenings, workshops and conferences in various locations every year historic and atypical of the city of Arles, such as churches, cloisters, industrial warehouses and galleries.

The Rencontres d'Arles are recognized for their ability to discover and promote new talents, while paying tribute to the great masters of photography. It is a unique opportunity to discover fascinating works, to exchange with artists and professionals from around the world, and to immerse yourself in the rich and diverse visual universe of contemporary photography.

3. La Roque d’Anthéron Piano Festival (July 20 – August 18)

Since 1981, the La Roque d'Anthéron Piano Festival has become an unmissable event for music lovers and classical music enthusiasts. Nestled in the enchanting setting of the Parc du Château de Florans, this festival is renowned for the exceptional quality of its concerts and for the beauty of its performance venues, which include parks, gardens, cloisters and churches.

Every summer, the festival welcomes the greatest pianists in the world as well as promising young talents. The eclectic and demanding program offers recitals, chamber music concerts, jazz evenings and contemporary creations. Attending a concert at La Roque d'Anthéron means living an unforgettable musical experience in a natural and intimate setting.

4. Etang de Berre Festival (June 24 to August 31)

This collective event is a great first for the 10 municipalities surrounding the famous Mediterranean lagoon! From June 24 to August 31, 2024, the Etang de Berre will be the star of the summer.

From weeks to months, from beaches to towns, from coast to coast, from misty mornings to sunsets, you can enjoy a diverse program around the themes of culture, science, sport, discovery and gastronomy. May these festivals sprinkle your summer with curiosity, sharing, meetings and parties!
