Vaucluse has a rich history marked by the Romans, who left numerous remains in Vaison-la-Romaine and Orange. In the Middle Ages, the region came under the influence of the popes, with Avignon as the papal residence in the XIVᵉ century. After the French Revolution, Vaucluse became a département in 1793. Today, it is known for its historic heritage, hilltop villages and iconic Provencal landscapes.
